Good, but with problems.

Pros

There's interesting work to be done across a variety of projects, which is unusual for a company that has a relatively small range of projects. People are often very friendly and overall the atmosphere of working is good. I am not someone who has made many long term friends from work but at BrightSign that feels somewhat different. The hours are also usually good, with an ability to feel genuinely "off the clock" when you go home as opposed to the soul-crushing obsessiveness many Bay Area companies believe is good. Profit-sharing is good.

Cons

As a growing company it has some problems with HR issues. Some employees have behaved inappropriately but without consequence, and as the company was built on a lot of familiar, and occasionally nepotistic, hiring there aren't always avenues open to younger employees to resolve these problems. It can feel that there is something of an "Old Boys' Club" operating, but I don't believe it exists with malice, rather just a lack of awareness. The policy on having no raises, rather increased profit sharing, and a lack of rewarded upward mobility is bad and definitely going to cause issues with talent retention.

Thank you for the review. At BrightSign, open communication is encouraged. If an employee feels that there is no avenue for such with their immediate supervisor, they are encouraged to speak with the next level up, all the way up to the CEO. Inappropriate behavior is not tolerated at BrightSign and our employee handbook clearly spells out what is and is not appropriate at work. Employees are encouraged to speak with management about anything they feel is inappropriate, with the assurance that their input will remain anonymous. While several BrightSign employees have worked together at previous companies, nepotism is not the norm at BrightSign. We are an equal opportunity employer. With regards to upward mobility, there have been several employees successfully promoted within the same department and cross-departmentally throughout the Company. We do our best to encourage and promote individuals who work hard and want upward mobility. With regard to compensation, our CEO and CFO review each employee’s performance and total compensation against the Radford Global Technology Salary Survey every six months. Compensation increases are given regularly to ensure employees are paid competitive market rates for the area in which they live. BrightSign has one of the highest levels of shared profit – 25% of the company’s annual profit is put back into the pool for employee profit sharing. Profit sharing is paid in cash to employees each quarter.

Pros

BrightSign has been able to attract and hire some very talented, smart and no-nonsense employees. This allows us to operate at a very rapid pace without a lot of drama or finger pointing if things go awry. We have also been able to grow the company at an optimal pace to balance expenses with earnings without a lot of external influences, which is quite rare in any company. I've worked for a lot of very cool companies in Silicon Valley and I have to say this is the coolest of them all.

Cons

I'm really having a hard time coming up with a list of cons that don't relate to my Advice to Management comments below. This is a pretty good sign.
