Pros

The clients are awesome and you can come to work knowing you are making a difference in someone's life. The flexible hours/schedule are also nice.

Cons

Everyone in the company seems to have very minimal skills and training, from DSP to HR to ED. They have to settle for whatever they can get because the pay is so ridiculously low. As a result, there is extremely high turnaround and nobody knows what they are doing. Corporate likes to randomly impose new policies and forms that make absolutely no sense and are just a waste of time. This company is very hung up on paperwork and unnecessary policies. Supervisors with no supervisory experience are hired because they can't afford anyone with experience...but then they are given zero training on how to manage and supervise. Which obviously results in a disaster. For what it's worth, my operation is supposedly one of the "better run" ones in my state and it is awful.

Pros

Clients can be very appreciative of the attention you give them. It is easy to become attached to them.

Cons

Where to begin? An Executive Director (recently demoted to Program Manager) who lets it be known that she doesn't like to be bothered with questions, she once assigned all of the management team to research the word "leader" and be prepared to present research findings at the next meeting. When we attempted to present, she stated that she didn't really want our research, she only wanted to prove a point that it's easy to find things on the internet and now that she knew we were all able to use a computer, she didn't want any more questions ..."use the intranet" instead of bothering her. An ED who witnesses staff get physically attacked by clients and instead of doing anything, runs out the back door, gets in her car and leaves. An ED who constantly fiddles with her cell phone, barely ever even looking up when she is conducting management meetings. A Program Manager (recently demoted to Day Program Manager) who instead of reading a week's worth of behavior reports, only flips through them signing them and setting them aside saying there are too many to go through so we aren't going to do it this week. I was once written up for not holding one of my staff accountable for disrespecting a Program Manager and failing to follow a directive. Then the next time she failed to follow one of my directives and I ATTEMPTED to write her up and hold her accountable, the ED, (her friend) came into my office and told me she was not accepting the write up and that she should instead, write me up for retaliating against my staff member!!! This office is 99.9% black and I am white. Hmmm?? This is an office that assigns investigations of employees to the HR person. Then when a person is terminated based on the HR person's investigation and recommendation, it is a HORRIBLE conflict of interest when that same HR person is the point of contact for all appeal documents. I could continue to give more examples of why ResCare is not an ideal place to work, but won't. All I will say is that if you choose to work for this company, do not expect support from management. Do not expect them to care if you are assaulted by clients. Do not expect adequate training. Do not expect professional and unbiased management. Do not expect them to CARE.
