Pros

I joined BuroHappold's London office in April 2015 as a Graduate Engineer, was promoted to Engineer in January 2017 and remained there until December 2017. I left to pursue a different career. The most positive aspects of life at BuroHappold (for me) were: - I worked on interesting and varied projects, most of which would have looked excellent on my CV had I continued a career in engineering. - Much of the staff are excellent - a lot of very talented, intelligent and thoughtful people work at BH. I made plenty of friends here and was fortunate to learn a lot from my colleagues. - Career prospects - it was clear that had I pursued this career, the opportunities and support were there. - Responsibility - even as a graduate, a lot of responsibility was handed to me and a lot of faith was put in my skills and abilities. This is empowering.

Cons

- The most prominent negative I encountered was the working hours. I was often given far too much work to complete within normal hours, and this was not uncommon for my colleagues. Complaints about overwork were often unheard or sated by managers with "I am also overworked, just like you", which is not a valid argument to make to employees. I suspect the reason is that BH is trying to compete with far larger design consultancies, and is bidding too low for very risky projects. I often felt that I was personally donating the % profit on projects with my free time in evenings. It was not uncommon for me to stay until 8/9/10pm every weekday for several weeks in a row. - The C-Suite / upper management were, I felt, a little out of touch with the use of modern technology. Given that a design consultancy's work is almost entirely completed using various engineering software, there was no real support within the Cities division to train people or push our use of technology in a beneficial direction. The management gave a lot of talk about a drive to get engineers coding, but I never saw any evidence of this. To their credit, I believe the Buildings division was far more open-minded than Cities in this respect.

Pros

BH has an amazing legacy of innovation and achievement. It is a place where good engineers can (if events align) become great engineers. It has thrived on a "just go and do.." approach that has served it well over the years, and enabled it to grow and even survive the recent recession relatively intact. There are incredible people working at BH. both inside and outside the various disciplines. Many of whom have worked for the practice for most, if not all of their careers. There is an informal and fun atmosphere among many of the teams. Each office around the globe has their own particular flavor while keeping core elements that make it a BH office. The company truly believes in developing people, and wants to be a place where you come for a job but stay for a career. Consequently there is tremendous institutional knowledge in house .

Cons

It is frustrating in that the same things that are great about BH are also where BH struggles. There are amazing opportunities to do great work at BH, but those opportunities are not evenly distributed or equally available to all staff, especially new staff. The ad-hoc approach that has served the firm well, is now its Achilles heel. BH has vastly outgrown its own support infrastructure. HR, Finance, IT and Project Management support are all woefully under resourced and struggle to keep up with demand. . BH does truly believe in developing staff, but has yet to put any realistic amount of resources behind that belief. Instead they just sort of hope it will happen organically. There are amazing people there, but frankly , on the flip side, some people have been there far too long. Some of these people have little or no experience outside of BH. So many of them, (some in very senior roles) are terrified of change, and in some cases actively resist anything that doesn't sit in their zone of comfort and familiarity. The corporate governance structure of the firm (LLP / Partnership built on a consensus model) is slow to adapt to organizational needs . Given the size and scope of the firm today it is long past time to revisit the model and see if it is still fit for purpose. The CEO role is an elected position. Serving a set term. So it is very hard for the CEO whoever it is, to actually lead the firm, given that all other Partners feel they are the owner/operators of the company. (Which in reality is exactly what they are.) Hence the CEO role tends to be a bit toothless. BH struggles endlessly with defining their brand. The latest attempts to do so, are an improvement, but still surprisingly unfocused and vague. Sad when you see it coming from a firm with such a substantial history and impressive catalog of work.

Pros

Company is very social if you drink.

Cons

The company seems to promote employees on years of service rather than suitability, skills for the jobs and how they work with employees lower than them (especially managers). No real training and roles aren’t really explained properly on what work is to be covered. Mostly working it out by yourself with no help from managers. Had to rely on other employees in the same role in other offices through Skype. Not introduced to the teams you are working with.

We are sorry to hear this has been your experience, we strive to be an inclusive employer offering a range of social activities suitable for all such as, football, tennis, badminton, running clubs, book & photography clubs and themed dinner nights. We appreciate your feedback on this matter and will review how we publicise our events internally. Our promotions are based on competency frameworks, through which we assess with suitability for progression. As a global organisation the need to work remotely is inevitable and have promoted the use of platforms such as Skype to enable our employees to work in an agile manner. Collaboration is key, it is disappointing to hear this was not your experience so once again we will take this back and review the unintended consequences of this form of communication. We take your reference to bullying very seriously and would invite you to take the opportunity to have a confidential meeting with a member of our HR team should you feel comfortable doing so or submit your feedback in confidence to our third party survey providers who run our exit interview surveys, details can be provided on request.
