Pros
Flexible positions. Some are fully remote, others are hybrid.
Cons
Management The management culture is authoritarian, with an implicit message of “do what I say or risk being fired.” This creates a high-pressure environment where open dialogue and healthy disagreement are discouraged. There appears to be inconsistent treatment among leaders. Women in leadership roles seem to experience more verbal pressure and scrutiny compared to their male counterparts feeling like abuse. Additionally, there is a perception of favoritism within certain leadership circles (Indians), where promotions and opportunities may not always be based on technical strength or professional merit. In some cases, when technically strong engineers challenge decisions or attempt to improve direction, their input is dismissed. When efforts are made to prevent biased decisions, it can lead to subtle forms of retaliation. Performance calibration processes do not always appear structured or consistent. Instead of relying on clear 1:1s, objective metrics, and transparent evaluation systems, there seems to be reliance on informal conversations and internal gossip among leaders and between leaders and engineers. This contributes to misalignment and reputational damage for some engineers. Engineers are often pulled into multiple initiatives simultaneously. While multitasking is expected in fast-paced environments, when priorities conflict or work falls behind due to overload, accountability tends to fall entirely on the engineer rather than on planning or leadership decisions. There is also a noticeable gap in technical understanding among leaders, which impacts day-to-day decision-making. When highly knowledgeable engineers step up to guide technical direction, their recommendations are sometimes overridden without sufficient technical reasoning. Additionally, employees who are dependent on work visas may feel particularly vulnerable in this environment, which can make it harder for them to push back or advocate for themselves and represent engineers interests when leads are under those visa issues. Work Operations Although Carvana operates as a large corporation, the day-to-day working model increasingly resembles that of a startup. Priorities frequently shift, and clarity around direction is often lacking. Engineers are expected to be on-call regularly and sometimes work weekends. As a result, work-life balance can be significantly impacted. Compensation Compensation does not always feel competitive relative to the workload and expectations. Stock grants are often positioned as the primary incentive to stay, and for some time they may offset concerns. However, over time, the gap between compensation and the demands of the role can outweigh that incentive.
