Forget the Company; Think about where you have to live!

Pros

Plenty of jobs available if you don't plan on staying long and look at it as a stepping stone to better opportunities in a better place.

Cons

The weather in Sidney is horrible. Too hot to go outside in the summer; too cold to go outside in the winter. The other two days are fine! Dirty; windy and smelly depending on the wind direction. There is no middle ground. If you've move from somewhere where there's water and trees, you won't be happy. If you think Cabela's is all about the outdoor life, think again. The corporate headquarters is in the middle of nowhere! There's absolutely nothing in Sidney. No amenities, not one great place to eat, no chains; you can't even get a Whopper within 40 miles. The company is making lots of money. That is their only concern. The management the use to be made up of hardcore outdoor people are gone.

Pros

Cabela's stores are huge, but the atmosphere is not that of a large store. The decor and layout of the stores make for a welcoming environment for customers and employees alike. The stores are well maintained, and the presentation of products is first class.

Cons

Where do I begin? Bass Pro Shops bought Cabela's back in 2017 and proceeded to ruin the company. They've replaced quality merchandise with junk. Customers who once thought the Cabela's name meant quality no longer shop there. Instead, we get the bargain hunters. Much of the focus nowadays is convincing customers to apply for the Cabela's-branded Mastercard. Customers can get points for buying selected merchandise in the store, points that are redeemable as cash on future purchases. The problem is 99% of customers either don't want a credit card or know they will be denied if they apply. It's a waste of time. Yet, every minute of every day an associate has to stand in front of the store to peddle credit cards. And even if they are not the "greeter", associates are expected to push credit cards when they are on the sales floor. That's one of the reasons customer service in the store is so bad. Associates don't try to sell product. Instead, they are told to focus on selling credit cards. So, what happens? Sales suffer, work hours are curtailed, and associates end up leaving. So, the store is constantly in a hiring mode. It's the definition of dysfunctional.

Pros

Anyone not management is good to work with. Pretty good pay. Hour lunches if you work 7+ hours. Good employee discount.

Cons

You must, must be willing to try to sell credit cards ever single day you work. If you don't get one every week there constantly nag you about it,it's very stressful. Managers are not super caring and slightly rude.
