Pros

Easy (somewhat) to schedule around school schedule and great discounts on merchandise. The great employee discounts through third-party programs are probably the only reason people stay employed beyond 6 months to one year. Work isn't too difficult and hourly wage is pretty good for retail. Potential for commission on some sales.

Cons

Management is absolutely incompetent and clueless. Extremely passive aggressive conflict resolution strategies are employed frequently, and that is if management actually chooses to mitigate conflict AT ALL. Most of the time managers simply ignore glaring issues and hope that they go away or that someone else will solve the problems for them. Cabela's management is a classic example of managers who have been promoted beyond the reach of their skill and experience levels, and thus everyone above the supervisor level is utterly incompetent at their job duties. Some managers spend their day on their computer online shopping and posting to Pinterest instead of helping on the floor when the store is busy, forcing lower level employees to stretch beyond their job duties to pick up the slack. To make matters worse, HR only chooses to pursue small infractions in arbitrary procedures instead of focusing on the real issues that face employees like harassment, discrimination, and internal theft.

Pros

The only reason to work here is if your looking for a part-time job, in school, retired and looking to supplement your income. They work well with your school schedule. The benefits are okay but nothing to brag about, expensive medical/dental vision plans. The employee discount is tiered. For the first two years you are at Basecamp which to me wasn't much of a discount. After two years your at Timberline which is better but your stuck there until you reach your seven year anniversary. After seven years your at Summit pricing which is at the peak of their tiered discount. At this level your able to enjoy the benefits of purchasing items slightly above cost. They offer vacation time each year and every year your with them you get a little more.

Cons

The number one challenge I had working here was having a hard time advancing. After several years of employment as a full-time employee having worked in several departments and a lead for a few years I was never given an opportunity to manage a department. I felt I was being held back by upper management and came to realize it wasn't what you know, but who you know. The company has changed drastically since we first opened the doors. I use to love working there. The company was privately owned and family oriented. Now its a publicly traded company. All they care about is pleasing the shareholders. Customers come second and employees pick up the scraps. I say customers come second because you go into a store now and you cant find any help. It's no better than Wal-Mart. They have consistently taken away from the employees, loss of Christmas bonuses, terrible annual raises, non-competitive pay, lay offs. You are literately overworked and underpaid.

Pros

Cool coworkers, decent employee discount, benefits for part time

Cons

Greedy policies, poor pay/hours, inconsistent leadership from the GM down. Most importantly though retail is inherently disenfranchising and the various means Cabela's employs to try and negate that fact are all for not. Also there is less of an emphasis on hard work and more of an emphasis on brown nosing.
