Managers need to realize that employees are smart and insightful. Ideas for direction seems to come strictly from the top down essentially making staff members worker bees with little to no input. Many of the managers are good friends with the directors, VP, and CEO so if an employee outside of that click is looking for growth, look elsewhere.
There is no investment in the growth of the staff. Promotions for good work come few and far between. It is usually unclear what the expectations are, leaving many staff members working hard and getting vague feedback.
The can be a flexible work environment, but how flexible is usually based on the manager. So one person can come in late everyday and his boss doesn't so much as bat an eye, while someone else may leave a half hour early every day for child care and is given a warning about attendance.
The paucity of management training is outrageous. Because they are in such fear of losing their own jobs, they rarely are supportive of their employees. If a staff member feels a project is going in the wrong direction because the manager is making bad decisions, it's the employee suffers. There is no support system for employees.
The workplace is very conservative and if you are different, you will sense that management isn't comfortable with you. If you're looking for innovation, look elsewhere. The way of land here is don't rock the boat and don't build better, just keep up with the competition.
If you're looking for a place to feel mundane, work on a task list that you have no input into or control over, this is the place for you. If worker bee mentality is your cup of tea, then you've found your job.
If you want career advancement, the opportunity to contribute your ideas, have a support system and feel accomplished in your work, look else where. This company is not looking for different and new, they are trying to keep up instead leading.
