Starting to go downhill

Pros

The benefits are great -- unlimited PTO, incredible health insurance, and mainly amicable people working there.

Cons

This is sadly all very recent, and if you asked me if it was a great place to work about 7 months ago, I would have absolutely agreed. The direction of the company is starting to turn concerning. The choices of upper leadership on the direction of the product, customers, and employees is something to watch out for as they move forward. Small batches of layoffs, but then promises of no issues with money. Removing roles of vital individuals without understanding the ramifications and losing a chunk of the customer base due to product choices. Lots of promises on things that aren't being delivered or delivered late, issues with too many new features on the product. This goes beyond "startup growing pains" as the culture and company shifted so drastically that it was easy to see from anyone working there.

Expect to work crazy hours

Pros

Benefits are on par with other tech companies

Cons

Expect to work crazy hours. Remote first means working overtime. They constantly move the goal post with new and bigger targets. Everyone is expected to “overachieve”, simply achieving targets is considered unacceptable. Expect to get pinged/messaged at all hours of the day and night. They love to promise you the world but in reality, there is little to no career growth, no bonuses and no salary increase.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback; we genuinely appreciate your honesty and would like to address your concerns. As a scaling company, change is both inevitable and essential for our success. This is particularly true for Series A-E, where adapting our strategies and approaches is extremely crucial for remaining competitive and focused on our goals. Ensuring employee well-being, promoting healthy work-life integration and enabling supportive leadership is a priority at Camunda. We absolutely do not advocate for long hours. As a flexible global remote company, every Camundi is encouraged to manage their own calendars and we understand that different time zones can make things tricky, Slack being an informal communication tool, messages may come in based on different time zones. However, we expect responses only during your work hours, respecting your personal time. We would really like to ensure we can address any of these aspects that did not work for you. If you are comfortable, we would highly appreciate you reaching out to our CPO to ensure we look into ways to improve further. Thank you once again for your transparency and for sharing your thoughts with us. Camunda People Team

It's a pivotal time... and I'm not convinced they're in the driver's seat

Pros

I really loved my time at Camunda. It was my favorite company I've ever worked for. It's hard to find an ethical company in tech, but Camunda had some cultural practices that felt genuinely ethical. The team I worked on was excellent and balanced work and play very well. I have made lifelong friendships with folks on my team. We accomplished a lot of really great things, and I am grateful for that. - Flexible schedule/environment - Unlimited time off - Fully remote - Autonomy and ownership of projects you are "DRI" for - Global team

Cons

In the past year or so, Camunda has gone through massive changes and I am not convinced the company culture I loved so much will weather the storm. There is a lot of pressure to get things done, whether or not they are quality in the end. I see more and more being added to peoples' plates without relief, either in the form of additional team members or removing other responsibilities. The overarching strategy seems to shift every 6 months or so. While some pivots are expected in a startup, the frequency makes Camunda feel like it is lacking focus, which makes it difficult to succeed in your role. When I started at Camunda, layoffs were not common or expected. Now, there have been intermittent layoffs of team members who seemed vital and loyal to Camunda. While I don't know all the details, it is confusing to me why they wouldn't find another role for people who were doing good work. Even if they were no longer needed in that role, there are enough people struggling with their workload that I find it hard to believe that layoffs were necessary. It is certainly not doing anything for morale. - Engineering (and likely other departments) are pushed too thin - Strategy seems to change every 6 months - Fun parts of the culture are being retired (company-wide retreat, regional events, etc.) - No longer focused on open source or community - More frequent layoffs and less certainty - Lower salary than industry standard in the US
