Engineering folks - avoid Capital One at all costs

Pros

I can't think of much here.

Cons

Choosing Capital One is the worst mistake of my career. Their offer letter has complex clawback clauses. If your leave before 4 years - they come back asking for sign on bonuses or relocation amounts paid to you 2 years back. Their performance management has a forced stack ranking with 8% at the below strong. which means - regardless of how people perform, they are looking for guinea pigs to push to the 8%. As a result - the employees squatting in the company for 10+ Years have adopt 1 or both of the following strategies: 1. They hire from outside and dish them to the 8% 2. they form cliques within the organization, giving each other positive reviews and the new guy is handed out the 8%. On top of this, their pay is way below the market. If you are in engineering, you are treated like a second class citizen. They keep bragging about their culture - I would say - that's the first thing that needs to change for the better. Wrong place for new tech talent to join. Avoid capital one at all costs,

Ambiguous and toxic environment

Pros

Great collaboration with anyone at a manager level or below

Cons

I have been a Product Manager with Capital One for 3 years. My roles and responsibilities have drastically changed multiple times over the course of my time. The stack ranking is just as bad as everyone says it is. I’ve witnessed amazing, capable and productive individuals in all job families be put in PIPs for ambiguous reasons. There’s too many layers of leadership making delivery difficult due to a constant shifts in priorities. When your project is deprioritized due to circumstances out of your control there’s a target on your back during the review cycle. It’s psychological abuse.

Pros

There are a lot of exciting projects to work on within the Company that have a wide variety of technologies that are used. If you possess the right skills, then Internal Mobility will be your best friend if you want to explore different areas within the Company. Compensation is pretty good for the industry, and there are quite a few events throughout the year to show employee appreciation (if you are able to make it them).

Cons

The stack ranking process during the mid-year and end-of-year reviews has caused a lot of anxiety amongst employees. Doing everything that is expected of you on a day-to-day basis is simply not enough, and you will get low ratings if you do make sure that you go above and beyond on everything, and there is a huge emphasis on getting "face time" with upper management. If you find yourself if an office where there isn't a lot of upper management, you will find this to be a very difficult to task. Many teams are also very overworked. Although there have been numerous times that employee surveys have indicated lack of trust in leadership and feeling burnt out, nothing happens aside from them saying "we will work on it" and giving us a free lunch.
