Pros
Very flexible hours. Dress code is pretty good - jeans, boots, leggings, cardigans, sandals, etc. For the most part the customers are nice and very patient on busy Saturdays. The workload is never too much and closings go smoothly. Floorsets and marketing changes are easy compared to some other retailers that I have worked for. I worked at a Side by Side store that allowed us to hire a full time stock associate which helped out a lot on the Carter's side.
Cons
Being that it was a Side by Side store, coverage was always an issue. Sometimes you would be the only manager managing two stores with multiple long lines, returns, and having to give associates breaks so get ready to work hard! This is a very coupon-driven business with many stipulations, so there's always customers complaining about not being able to use their coupons on a $5 top. Shoplifting was horrific! The same groups of women would come in my store and steal a LOT of merchandise and there was NOTHING the company would do to allow us to stop it other than use customer service. A few shoplifters were violent and harassed us with racial remarks when they got caught. I ended up having to go to court over one incident and it took the company over a month to pay me for my time. And don't get me started on vacation time! You accrue PTO time, but have to get your vacation time approved by your DM (who never came around) so I never got to take mine before I quit. Also, if your associates call out you cannot hold them accountable for getting their shift covered. I've had to stay and work 12 hour shifts many times so that my closing managers were not stuck doing a sale change on single-person coverage which REALLY sucked!
