Lucky to Work Here

Pros

Cartera is a fantastic place to work. Some of the pros of working here are: -flexible schedule, ability to work from home, etc. -results-oriented atmosphere - i.e., the people that work here are less concerned with their titles, how they dress, their place in the hierarchy of the company, and more concerned with getting the job done. Does the job always get done on time or 100% without issue? No. But then there are meetings to learn from our mistakes and decide how to avoid it next time. And the people who went the extra mile to try to get it done are given their due credit. -Team focused - there is no "I" in Cartera. Nuff said. -Management is approachable, supportive and dedicated to the growth of their employees. There have been recent layoffs, and it was very unfortunate, however they were necessary and it is expected that there will be some road bumps for every start-up. At the end of the day, the executive team is looking out for what is best for the company and what will make it grow so the talented people who work there have the best opportunities. -It is so fun to work here!!! We have outings, a Day of Service, after work drinks and lots of social opportunities in and outside of work. The people at Cartera really enjoy working with each other, but more importantly - they like each other in general. People are much more motivated and work harder when they are surrounded by like-minded, hard working people who make it fun to come to work. Of course not everyone gets along, there will always be those that don't, but I have never worked at a company with this little drama and backstabbing. It's almost as if we are all grown-ups. -competitive salary, yearly bonuses, good benefits, and growth opportunities - check! -I feel appreciated, I feel like the work I do does not go unnoticed, and we are all each other's biggest fans. Sounds pretty great, right? Well, it is. -I know I will never find another company where I feel so comfortable, appreciated, and well taken care of.

Cons

-Every company has some bad apples, but typically they don't stick around for long -Internal Communication can be lacking at times although Tom Beecher really does a great job at keeping the whole company abreast of the state of the business with monthly "All Hands Meetings" -People can get overworked and there are tight resources, but I do believe that other perks make up for it and extra work does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. -The number of "fires" that need to be put out can be stressful but the laid back atmosphere of the workplace makes it much easier to handle

Pros

So first off, in the last two years there have been quite a few rounds of layoffs at Cartera, which caused some bitterness and hurt feelings. That said, I feel that from the inside, things look much better and that Cartera is a great choice for a workplace. Working at Cartera: I feel that all the key aspects to make me a happy employee are there: I am expected to complete projects and goals that are well defined, I get work hours flexibility as long as I do my work, I work with a great group of people which I enjoy talking to beyond work hours and I get full backup from management and an attention to what I’m interested in. Do people get slammed with unexpected production issues that need to be done yesterday? Sure, but that happens everywhere, and there is a genuine effort to avoid that. And it’s not all work and no play: LOVED the Halloween party, there were company outings, Cartera Day of Service, movie night (well, afternoon) and lots more. Cartera as a Company: In the past six months or so there has been a palpable change in the energy of the place. There has been more hiring on the technical side, the focus has shifted from a not-so-successful platform to the profitable platform and there was investment in training and technology to keep ahead of the curve. There is still a tension between having risk-averse clients and a fast changing field, but there is some effort in churning out more ideas and executing on them. In short: Great team of fun & intelligent people, great flex-time, excellent management & no on-call duties

Cons

The open-space layout: I used to like the easy access to colleagues, but as the company is growing, it's getting to be a bit much…

Pros

Friendly people and friendly work environment. Those that say otherwise simply don't know how to be civil, humble, or friendly and simply don't play well with others. Lots of solid work to be done that has a direct impact on the company bottom line. You feel a sense of actually driving the business and company forward working on the projects here, especially more recently within the past year. Despite a dated tech stack, you do learn a lot. And there's movement to shift to more robust and recent tech. So there's an opportunity to learn and grow technically albeit there is no clear date in the future when this will 100% come. The work here really challenges and improves your problem solving skills. You have to handle a lot of information in a system with lots of moving parts and be able to effectively organize it. You have to put your Sherlock Holmes hat on and do solid research through the system to get to the root cause of problems and then come up with an effective solution. This is probably one of the best parts about being a Software Engineer or even a Solutions Architect here. The problem solving really keeps your mind sharp, if you're able and willing. You can't be lazy, you really have to focus and put your head into it. Cartera has competitive pay and benefits package. If you're talented, contributing effectively, and they like you/want to keep you, you won't have to worry about keeping your salary and benefits up here. The work/life balance is impeccable and very respected here so long as you're getting your job done and contributing! If you don't abuse the freedom, this is a very comfortable place to work if you value work/life balance. I must comment on some of these, frankly immature, unprofessional negative reviews: I've read a lot of these very harsh negative reviews and I must say I'm a bit surprised. Yes Cartera had some rounds of layoffs and we downsized to Boston only. This was done in order to keep our business not split between Boston and Atlanta (the biggest reason we had struggles was because of this and the failing Atlanta platform to generate significant revenue) so that we could once again become profitable. Seems like a perfectly logical, sound decision from management. They tried to get into a new piece of the market with the Atlanta platform, it didn't work, it was pulling the company down, so it had to be cut. That's 101 level decision making. Feelings were clearly hurt and it seems like former employees have taken to trolling glassdoor to relieve their frustrations. Kind of sad really because in this field/business, especially the technology side, it's not at all that difficult to find work. So people were let go. Ok, quit whining, grow up, be a professional and deal with it; find another job. For the alleged "current employees" leaving such horrible, hate filled reviews... why not just leave? Clearly you haven't been able to develop a positive career, unlike others, at this company. So quit whining and leave.

Cons

Technology stack is dated and there's only a shred of light for using a more robust, recent technology stack in the near future. I don't doubt it will eventually come, but for my taste, it needs to come sooner. Lack of transparency between business teams and technical teams.
