Pros

Outstanding pay, when compared to cost of living in Central Illinois it is almost astronomical in proportion. Nothing seems to come close. Depending on the group, work life balance can also be great. Management is generally of high character. Upper management, i.e. VP, Presidents, CEO appear incredibly sharp and most capable to help the company weather many storms. It appears that problems in management are addressed, and poor managers are given other assignments.

Cons

Work can be uninteresting at times, at least for electrical engineering. Standard corporate mentality(this could be pro or con depending on your view point).

Pros

Conservative, stable corporation that offers a great 401(k) program and good medical/dental benefits. Paid vacation, paid holidays and personal days provide you with plenty of time to do the things you want to do outside of work. Finally, the company actually stands behind its tuition reimbursement program unlike other companies (CAT paid 90% of my tuition in getting my MBA from Bradley Univ.).

Cons

Once hired into a specific business unit of the company, it is very difficult to transfer to another business unit. Senior mgmt prefers that employees remain in the business unit they were hired into indefinitely. There needs to be more performance feedback reviews for each employee. Too often this gets ignored by managers because of other higher priorities from their own supervisor.

Pros

good compensation compared to other companies. good job security since caterpillar loves to keep employees around for 20-30 years. good recognition if working on a new emissions regulation

Cons

Same old mentality of "No change". Keeps people around from 20-30 years. It can keep you in the same position and same group for 10-15 years unless you fight for change. Cuts corner through agency layoffs. Highly inefficient knowledge sharing. Salary of new hires end up higher than current employees in some instances.
