Pros

Generally, good people that work hard. Robust continuing education and policies.

Cons

Old IT systems, some of which are really old. Difficult to obtain quality candidates that stay. Some department specializations are highly inflexible.

Company Stuck in 2015

Pros

Coworkers are the strongest part of the company. Always there to help. Most managers are also helpful and doing their best within a flawed system.

Cons

The executives have a terminal case of MBA-brain and have zero clue of what the lab staff actually do (and they couldn't care less to learn what they do). We made do with broken equipment, poorly implemented and barely functional IT systems, barely functional computers, workflows that were designed in 2014 for 20% of the current sample volume (and not maintained over 10+ years), and severe understaffing. Any attempt to ask help on these problems is met with unrelenting refusal by the executives. Then they are confused as to why turnover is so high and morale is so low. Workers really need to unionize to push back. Pay is well below average, benefits are average, and there's next to no way to move up in the company.

Fabulous Management

Pros

Management in my department is amazing. They're caring, understanding, and engaged with their employees. I've been at companies where a superior asking to talk to me caused serious anxiety and panic and I haven't felt that here. My supervisor calling me or putting a meeting on my schedule randomly (which almost never happens) doesn't cause the feeling of dread that I'm used to because they've developed a culture of open and honest communication. They choose their words and actions with care to ensure that their employees feel comfortable coming to them in times of need and that they feel less stressed throughout the day. I feel informed, appreciated, supported in everything I do, and truly part of a great team doing important work.

Cons

It's not entirely fair due to the size of the company, but the company insurance coverage could use some work. The insurance doesn't cover as much as a national or international company's policy would. it's not a deal-breaker, though, in my opinion.
