Pros

Everything - I loved working for Schwab until the RTO email was sent out.

Cons

I have been fully remote for several years since being hired. I never had any intention of having to drive into an office and work in a cubicle. That was always the expectation set through discussions with managers and executive emails. Out of nowhere, every employee received an email stating that we had to return to the office. I'm hours away from the nearest office. I have ADHD and cubicles are too distracting. I'm unproductive in office environments which is why I took this position remote. Untill yesterday I planned to be at Schwab for a long time, but this changes everything. To say I'm livid is an understatement.

Pros

Bankers hours; low stress; a cube to call your own

Cons

-Travel back to 50’s style management styles -leave your aspirations of autonomy, mastery, and purpose at the security turnstile. -Clinging to the outdated org structure and mindset of “business” people and “tech” people. -Arrogant and pompous old school boys club-not a progressively minded company at all. -Good ol’ lifers club protect their own and only welcome in those who are willing to play their game their way. -Passive aggressive tactics towards anyone who brings a different perspective or tries to break the lifers out of their stale trenches. -A collection of the most polite, courteous jerks as they passively undermine your career goals. -Do as you are told-don’t challenge authority or the hierarchy of the org structure and you could have a job for life. . -If you have worked in a modern tech or product company, be prepared for severe culture shock and schedule your lobotomy today. You will no longer need the logic and reasoning portion of your mind.

Pros

- Culture of collaboration - Great lateral opportunities to move/gain experience in different spaces across the company - Good work/life balance (if you've learned to draw your own healthy boundaries) - 1 month paid Sabbatical every 5 years - Great place to learn about the financial industry

Cons

- Heavily bureaucratic and hierarchical (workplace politics and "who you know" play a BIG role) - Decisions consistently prioritize shareholders over employees (employees feel 15th+ on the priority list). Feedback is encouraged, but then responded to with lip service/heavily manicured surface-level statements - Touts "challenger" and "disruptor" mentality, but in reality, that's quite rare - Schwab is very conservative and most innovation dies on the vine - Run by middle-aged white, male boomers surrounded by yes-men, and it shows in the top-down culture. - Current CEO, Walt Bettinger makes 210x the median employee pay ($24.4M vs. $116k respectively). No confidence in the "heir apparent" CEO, Rick Wurster ($10.7M). - Forced return to office 3x/week. Full-remote decisions are reviewed/rescinded every 6 months. Overly complicated rules with fear-based motivations.
