Waste too much time

Pros

If you need experience in a classroom or experience working with children this is a good way to get your feet wet. Depending on where you serve, you will be in a classroom with a partner teacher so that can help you decide on a teaching career or not.

Cons

Wastes a lot of time. They try to do so much with their corps members within a single year. They say it's for our benefit, but it's not. We don't figure out what we're really doing throughout our service year until mid November (even though we have a 2 week basic academy training in the beginning).

Pros

People are motivated, passionate, and invested in each others' success. The staff is diverse, young, and promotes a "get it done" attitude. City Year is truly values driven. Opportunities for early career professionals to take on many responsibilities and for upward advancement.

Cons

Leadership are not experts in the field in which they practice. The pivot to education reform from general community service has caused problems as staff at all levels are ill-equipped to transform 18-24 year olds into effective academic interventionists in 9 months time.

Pros

-Really rewarding work. You really feel like you make an impact every single day, so you sleep pretty well at night if that's something you're worried about

Cons

really long hours, poor pay, and ineffective management. most managers have just started entering their professional lives and they do a horrible job at responding to feedback and creating a positive work culture. makes you really regret working for them, trick is to pay attention to the wider impact. also, they are terrible at responding to stress. terrible.
