Best job that I've ever had!

Pros

Clean Water Action is a great career stepping stone. You are taught so many skills in a hands-on fashion that are difficult to learn in a traditional classroom setting, especially persuasive communication. Working for a cause that you believe in feels really good, and people who decide to make it a career are offered a competitive salary and decent benefits package.

Cons

Canvass and organizing jobs can be similar to sales in that they require an extreme amount of tenacity and positivity while facing a lot of rejection.

Pros

-incredibly positive, kind, and passionate staff -you'll learn a LOT about NJ environmental policy -you do a lot more than canvassing; there are opportunities to do direct lobbying, there are tons of events you can attend, and your Canvass Director can connect you with other parts of the organization so you can branch out in that area as well (social media, Lobbying, etc.) -if you're doing this for a summer job, the pay is pretty good! 500 a week, and if you get above your quota for the week, 40% of whatever you make is added to your paycheck -personally I loved the hours, because I hate mornings -you get to be outside most of the day, so you're not trapped in an office -you're on your own for a majority of the day, so there's a lot of independence -you'll meet some really great people while canvassing!

Cons

-while you do meet some great people canvassing, you also meet some jerks; if you can withstand a couple of people being rude to you every once in a while though, it's totally fine -you canvass no matter the weather (unless it's really extreme), so sometimes weather conditions can be a bit rough -personally I enjoy canvassing, but you do need to be an extrovert- if you're an introvert or just generally don't enjoy talking to strangers, I wouldn't go for this job

Pros

Everyone gets benefits. This was before the ACA, so I don't know how this may have changed. The work environment is certainly fun if you're into drum circles. Pay is decent considering they'll hire 90% of people who walk through the door - IF you meet fundraising quotas.

Cons

Like any sales job, there is a quota. This is strictly enforced, but that it all laid out for you ahead of time. If you can walk door to door and get people to give you money on a regular basis, you'll be fine. There is also a very political tint to everything you'll do. It's a progressive company, so politics and policies are as well. If it comes up, and you end up saying something conservative, you will get funny looks and probably pushed out the door through passive aggression or subtle hints.
