Pros

There was the ability to get bonuses. The people you meet (not regular employees.. usually the canvassing folks) end up your friends.

Cons

They treat employees poorly. HUGE roll-over with employees because it's door-to-door canvassing. The management doesn't even believe in their own mission. They whole goal is to get money from people through canvassing.. There's no real action taken by the organization.

Pros

Great office culture, very focused on environmental mission and having fun, professionally; Gives you excellent opportunity to grow into the organization and rewards those who are committed and passionate about the work; has strong leadership teams that have many years of experience managing field outreach campaigns and all logistics/management involved; Provides ample opportunity for those who excel at field work to travel and do paid internships; Has an open door policy with any upper management staff who are willing to talk to anyone, regardless of whether its your first day there; is a smart, professional, trustworthy, and successful organization that knows what grassroots action is capable of. Flexible about scheduling, and has great benefits such as dental and health insurance.

Cons

Disclaimer: These are not all cons, but considerations and realities about the work...Interesting hours, can be part-time nonetheless. Absolutely requires excellent interpersonal communications skills and willingness to put aside (sometimes) major rejection from community members who are confused about the work and have no idea who the stranger at their door is. Hard work, sometimes strenuous and dynamic work environment, but worth it if you believe in what the environmental movement needs to do to win major victories. Requires ability to be constantly flexible with yourself, peers, and members of the community. Leadership requires major personal investment into the work - IE longer hours, and more responsibility.

Pros

Clean Water action is really effective at what they do with grassroots organizing and environmental advocacy. They get it done on a very very small budget. A great example of a very accessible organization that puts people over profits every time and encourages as much in public advocacy. If you are political, driven, and bent on making the world a better place this will be a great place for you to start your career!

Cons

Canvassing and fundraising is really really important and necessary work. If you are a person who has difficulty connecting the dots about the need to raise money (unbeholden to corporate interests) to do political work, it could be difficult for you to maintain the motivation to be consistently successful in a canvassing job.
