Pros

I've worked other places so I know that Coffman is unique. Management spends a lot of time creating a workplace that balances individual needs with company needs. They don't just talk about wanting to be a great place to work, they actually make it happen. We've had quite a bit of growth over the past couple of years and although the overall company has gotten bigger, each individual office retains the local office feel. Excellent benefits, generous leave, and strong leadership mean that I actually like working here and don't have any plans to leave. Plus, I like my coworkers.

Cons

I can’t really think of any cons about working here at Coffman. As is the case with most consulting engineering firms, we have our busy times when we have to get projects out. During those times we have to work more overtime than I like but eventually it balances out. Managers actually care about their employees so will work with us if something comes up and we need to take extra time off.

The part of your comments where you stated, "Plus, I like my coworkers", is very encouraging. You made several comments about our great work place and you gave a lot of credit to the leadership. However, the leadership can only create the environment through decisions and our own behavior. The culture is ultimately established by the whole team believing, engaging, and protecting the environment that we have. So the fact that you like your coworkers is an indication that our culture is pervasive and attracts and retains the very employees that will perpetuate it. You are obviously one of those perpetuators and protectors. Thanks for what you are doing. It is our success. Dave Ruff - President

Pros

Amazing co-workers and company structure. Even though Coffman Engineers has locations in many locations we still work together like we our under one roof. I work just as much with people in my local office as I do with offices in other locations. Another positive is that everyone from the Project Managers to the CEO’s have an “open door” policy, no one is treated inferior, only as equals. They also have a great benefit program.

Cons

So far I have not found any cons.

The one company feel is certainly one of the differentiators for our company and we are working diligently to keep it that way. To that end, recently we started semi-annual summits with all of the general managers. The intent is to keep us unified as one team but allow for the autonomy that keeps us nimble and empowered. Tough to balance for sure, but worth the effort. Dave Ruff - President.

The culture is welcoming, fun and positive.

The medical benefits aren't what you would expect from a large firm.

We take this advice very seriously. Recently I had the general managers meet for a summit. One of the objectives was to reaffirm clarity around our purpose for being in business. We answered the question "Why do we do that", and kept asking it until we narrowed in on our most fundamental motivation. It didn't surprise us, and it was rather confirming, that our ultimate purpose for being in business is to take care of people. It was agreed that there is a core motivation beyond profit and prestige that drives the engine of Coffman Engineers. It is people. Take care of people and the profit will take care of itself. Take care of the business to take care of people and take care of people to take care of the business. Thanks for your input. - Dave Ruff, President
