Pros

Overall compass hires extremely well. I work with some of the most talented dynamic individuals I have ever worked with. When I first joined there was ample opportunity to grow and build new skills. However this has shifted dramatically and is no longer the case.

Cons

The amount of change that this company has gone through in the last year is unmatched. Upper level decisions are made that make work for the middle and lower levels impossible. When I was recruited I was told I was being hired as a customer success manager for a booming tech company. Now my role has devolved into a secretarial position where I am essentially the admin for 200+ agents. Not only that but compass laid off a significant amount of marketing, tech and product support. Which means, I also carry the responsibilities of these roles with no elevated compensation, rewards or incentives. Everyone is burnt out except for the people who suck up to management and gossip. They are rewarded making the entire culture deeply toxic. Middle management is complacent and does nothing to support their direct reports. This is not a real tech company it is a brokerage, so if you want to pursue a path in tech this is not it. They only get great people because they blatantly lie about the role and opportunities in the interviews. Lastly, compass announced that this was the year of the employee yet has done more to harm employees, including 2 rounds of massive layoffs, taking away perks and benefits like wellness and tuition stipend and taking away bonuses and raises. Truly stay away.

Cultish company that cares more about style than substance

Pros

Compass is a great place to be a real estate agent but a really poor place to be an employee. The best thing about it is that there are some smart people you get to work with — but most are gone pretty quickly when they realize it’s kind of a smoke and mirrors culture.

Cons

It feels like a cult and unless you’re punch drunk on the company kool-aid, it’s really hard to derive meaning from the work. The CEO surrounds himself with cheerleaders who care almost exclusively about how he sees them because nap judgements dictate who’s in the inner circle and there aren’t the kinds of objective success metrics a thriving business manages to.
