Manager - career development opportunity

Pros

Growing company, adding divisions and has vision of marketplace presence. Introduction of HFM (Oracle) is a positive and corporate WILL train if you ask and are identified as a committed high potential employee (i.e. need to take ownership of your career goals at Core-Mark, no hand holding). This is a US public company so pay for performance is inherent. This low margin, distribution company is for hard workers. Open minded people who absorb high levels of information will benefit from the experience of this company for advancement or career experience. Most managers were competant, committed and hard working.

Cons

Compensation average to below average, bonus structure was low by % for level of responsibilities vs. comparable companies. Hours can be very long if you are looking to advance, upwards of 60 hour weeks in busy seasons and occasional weekends. Base inventory and reporting system are old (AS400), may be frustrating to software savvy applicants. A lot of 'busy work' compiling reports that are system generated at other companies. Profit drives decision making process and defines your 'success' as a division, bottom line results oriented. Has proven model and procedures that do not require creativity and you are expected to learn on the job quickly. Is a simple business format, so learning and experience will taper over time. Advancement may require relocation as management opportunities arise across the 30 division network. Union environment hurts the culture, decision making and profitability of division. Union issues distract management from allocating resources to more beneficial activities, like developing their staff etc.

Pros

Good pay and benefits. Good Chance to travel to different division and work with good people all over the country.

Cons

Management sometimes it is a revolving door. Working nights is hard on the family life. You sometimes have to chase her money to get paid correctly.
