Pros

Very professional environment Opportunity to receive Six Sigma training Assigned project(s) can be very open-ended

Cons

*Please note that this is simply a rating of my personal experience, not the company as a whole: My mentor was a relatively new employee still trying to find his niche, and was too busy completing his own work to assist or direct me very often. I felt more like a nuisance than a protegee to him. My boss was very amiable and I felt like he genuinely wanted to help me, but he was usually too swamped in meetings to meet and discuss my projects. The work environment felt very stiff and formal. I felt very self-conscious about being myself around the more senior staff, which made work less enjoyable.

Pros

Sole company of its kind -- world class US glass manufacturer. Polite culture. General strong sense of community. R&D driven. Business strategy is key to decision making. Low costs of living; a dollar goes very far in this part of the country.

Cons

Rural and in middle of cold nowhere. Hard to move up or move out; no area competition for high-skilled talent, so this lowers personal mobility, wage levels, as the location shifts power dynamics in favor of company vs employee interests. Layoffs mean you relocate out, generally. Company can feel insular. Weak, over-egalitarian bonus compensation structure.

The Corning Values Are A Joke

Pros

The employees (non-executives) are hard working, great people. They are like family and care about the company and crafting quality products.

Cons

The company lays off and reorganizes at least every other year. They lay off the people with the most experience without ever really knowing their role in the first place. The CEO announced the upcoming relocation to Charlotte in December and at that time he PROMISED ALL EMPLOYEES would make the move and that there would be a place for everyone. In February they laid off around 20 people. There will be more. They will rape the company and then hire all new people once they move to Charlotte. Everyone knows this.
