Pros

Employees have purpose and are happy to be and work and are driven to satisfy the customer. There is an air of positive attitude at Corning Cable Systems.

Cons

The hours of salaried field engineers and similar employees range from 40 hours to 80 hours per week. The salary does not compensate for the hardships of the first year and a half. There is no tuition assistance for lower level positions, only for those who are in the mid to upper management.

Pros

Fortune 500 company, great benefits and pay over all. The plants in the Hickory area are very clean, you could almost eat off of the floor. Both plants still have smoking areas. No one really has to work that hard. One great benefit is the bank of time that each employ gets. Twelve hours of paid time off for each month during your first year, plus 4 paid core holidays on top of this. Total of 144 hours of vacation/sick time for whatever you want. This goes up over the following years. Great 401K plan with a matching Corning stock, WESPP plan.

Cons

Right now, the telecom sector is a little soft and we have just been through a round of layoffs, maybe more to come. A lot of our work has gone to Mexico and seems that more may follow. CCS has became more impersonal since Corning has taken over completely from the days of SIECOR, which was a partnership between Corning and Siemens. Right now, it is hard to look to the future at Corning Cable Systems because of the economy and the recent layoffs. As I am still employed there, I hope things turn around for them once more so I will be able to retire from Corning.
