Pros

Typical retail setting- high demands for visual and keeping things to standard. Relatively good environment.

Cons

As a retail manager, you are not as respected or valued as much as a restaurant manager or GM. You will constantly have to apologize for restaurant problems and fix things for your restaurant partner, but you are given very little in return in pay, time off, respect, or help whatsoever from the restaurant side. Mostly you’re just an underpaid manager having to deal with both sides of the business for no bonuses because the bar is set to ensure you won’t get one and you don’t bonus off of your restaurant profit even though you helped to get them there by taking care of their problems and issues. Work-life balance is lacking as well.

Pros

You do get discounts on food and retail. Many stores have hourly associates that you will love and adore and work really hard. If there's anything I miss about this role it would be the hourly team members I worked with.

Cons

There is no management structure at the restaurant level. You show up and if you're the first manager then you decide what role you want to play that day (FOH, BOH). If the GM finds you before they find another manager, then you will be tasked with whatever needs to be done and that has to be done while you're filling a production role as well. There is no system of accountability.

Pros

The food is pretty good. Atmosphere is nice. The gift shop is nice and the Team members get a great discount.

Cons

Where to start? the company refuses to staff the restaurant for success at all times. This means that you, as a Manager will be working at least 90% of your shift as an hourly if you are in the kitchen that shift, and you still will not be able to keep up. One day you are going to bed at 2AM and the next day you are getting up at 3AM. Get used to apologizing to guest multiple times per shift. The Take out service is horrible. In order for the company to save a few dollars an hour you will field multiple calls a day about messed up / incomplete orders and in return compensating the guest free meal(s). Just to be clear, this is not sour grapes. I have 33 years of Corporate Management experience. There is a reason that the company pays a little more; they will chew you up and spit you out. Quality of life is horrible. My advice; don't do it.
