Pros

Individual Contributors (ICs) are generally competent and passionate about anime and customers Fun product -- anime. Nice perks that come with a tech company environment (lunch, subscription service for employees, raffle off merch, modest store discount). Compensation in line with Northern CA (Bay Area). Senior management seems diverse in terms of gender/ethnicity, so they got that going for them.

Cons

Senior management is toxic, and doesn't trust each other. After the merger, most former Crunchyroll senior management are gone -- it's almost all ex-Funimation people at the top. They are behaving as if the axe will fall and they don't want their name associated with any decision (may become a self-fulfilling prophecy). Things are addressed only when something breaks down (failure), and little is done to prevent failure. As a result, teams/departments are siloed and are incentivized to not work together. If your job involves having to work with other parts of the business, good luck. The ones that get ahead are the ones that burn the candle at both ends and do what senior management says and doesn't ask questions. ICs are stuck doing the work only to have management look like it was their idea all along. CR is growing mainly because of the work of ICs and the passionate fanbase. Environment allows for toxic individuals to thrive (use your imagination). Near-zero career development -- management doesn't want to look like they're spending on anything other than what will increase sales. High turnover -- hard on morale, and it's hard to know what's been done before.

Pros

decent perks and coworkers who like anime

Cons

notice how there’s mostly 1 star reviews sprinkled with vague 5 star reviews? managers here are incompetent and only look to hire for their ego. feels threatened if people have more skill. listen to the reviews here under 3 stars… there’s a reason most people leave after 1.5 years.

Crunchyroll Response

We're sorry to hear about your experience during your time with our Marketing team. Coworkers sharing your love of anime is unique and one of the most special parts of being on the Crunchyroll team. We're glad that resonated for you while you were with us. When you have a 1-star experience, it can feel like that must be true for everyone else as well. The reality is that since the acquisition in 2021, the challenges of unification can lead to some 1-star experiences and some 5-star experiences at the same time. We can assure you we are listening and learning and committed to creating as many 5-star experiences as possible.

Pros

- Colleagues with shared anime passion. - 3-Day Hybrid - Amazing workplace team for in-office experience. - Dedicated ERG groups with good people.

Cons

- Power harassment - Overwork - Under-resourcing - Bad management - Burnout - Don't come here unless you plan to melt your brain with anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medication. I am not exaggerating when I say if you love anime and work at Crunchyroll too long, you may develop severe mental health conditions. I am warning you. They can and do treat talent as disposable due to the strong brand love among young job seekers, and they find ways to remind everyone such as constant restructurings and abrupt mass firings. Is anime love really worth it? Is your mental and physical health worth it?
