Poor Management Makes the Role Unsustainable
Pros
Some capable colleagues at delivery level. Interesting work in theory.
Cons
Poor management culture and inconsistent leadership. Line management lacks basic people-management skills, with frequent micromanagement, shifting expectations, and communication that relies on pressure rather than support. Policies (flexible working, sickness absence, development/training) are applied inconsistently and sometimes incorrectly, creating confusion and anxiety for staff. There is little transparency, minimal constructive feedback, and limited investment in employee development. Attempts to raise concerns or resolve issues informally lead to short-term fixes at best, with problems quickly resurfacing. During periods of restructuring, the environment becomes particularly stressful, with low psychological safety and limited trust.
