Not worth minumum wage

Pros

Easy to request time off

Cons

I was hired as a part-time employee but by August I was working 50+ hours a week with no days off for weeks at a time. On my few days off I would frequently get called in due to scheduling issues or issues with other employees. The company as a whole has little regards for their employees and will not recognize anyone that goes above and beyond for their job. If possible, DRD will pay as little as they can, even paying less than minimum wage at times (legal for recreational or seasonal employees, but not worth the stress and complications the job causes). Overall it felt as though DRD cared more about hiring as many workers for as little money as possible rather than hiring qualified and capable workers and giving them an adequate salary.

Great for highs school and college students

Pros

Very fair to you if you put in the work. It is an excellent job for a high school or college student. Hours are easy, though days can be long. Full time guards tend to work 3 to 4 10 hour days a week. I loved the job and they treated me very well for my numerous years employed with them.

Cons

Money isn't great, but it's enough for a high school student. I made do with my summer earnings through college. Sometimes patrons can be rude and unpleasent, but this i's how it is for any job where customer service is part of the work day.

Lifeguard

Pros

Great work environment. Appreciation of parents because they know you're there to keep them and their children safe.

Cons

DRD charges their lifeguards for training. While they offer a discount, it is based on working a specific number of hours. There is also a reimbursement for holding a GPA of 3.5 or higher but I think you only get that if you work the specific number of hours. Unfortunately, they hire too many guards making it literally impossible to accrue the requisite number of hours. Then there is the issue of poor pay. They pay less than minimum wage to starting guards. Howard County starts at $10 and Montgomery County even more. Columbia Association pays a little more but their training is free so, you obviously make more at CA. The DRD website says you can "work as many or as few hours" as you want. Not true. Way to many lifeguards hired so the new guards get few hours.
