A sinking ship from a cultural perspective

Pros

Great product and market position. Provides benefits on par with bigger tech giants (good healthcare, wellness reimbursement, snacks, lunches). Office has incredible views of the city.

Cons

Management is utterly lacking at Datadog, and it seems several managers have found themselves in positions of leadership despite having woefully inadequate leadership qualities. Poor leadership, paired with the fact that most communication (even with the people next to you) takes place over Slack, has created a culture of hostility and paranoia. I've seen people at the VP level publicly shame and embarrass their team members in open Slack channels. I've also witnessed (and heard) the business operations managers scream at their reports and berate them in the kitchen in the middle of the afternoon (note: you may be able to scream at a vendor on the phone until you get what you want, but that's not a tactic you should try with your employees). This all points to a failing HR philosophy that is exclusively concerned with benefits platforms/systems and seems to care nothing about leadership development, employee happiness, or conflict negotiation. An egregious instance of harassment initially resulted in a minor slap on the wrist before word of the incident began to spread and HR wasn't able to sweep it under the rug. The office environment feels hostile to almost anyone who isn't a white male.

Micromanagement and Unrealistic Targets

Pros

- Onboarding team is top notch - Great benefits - Product is solid

Cons

- Be weary of the reviews as the company asks employees to write positive reviews - Sales is a total bro culture, lacks diversity, and is toxic. There is zero collaboration amongst team mates since most reps are starving to make any commissions. - Sales management micromanages and has unrealistic expectations. - Even if your meeting the KPI expectations you are labeled as an underperformer. What’s the point of setting KPI goals if you really expect people to perform beyond the goals? - Every rep carries the same quota despite territory, tenure, or account list. - Long sales cycle - Reps are allowed to work any account that has a presence in their region which creates conflict amongst reps. Management knows this but care because closing deals is all they care about even if it creates conflict. Look at other top class organizations, none of them have this type of engagement model. - The only reps that are closing deals where first in the territory. - Sales management is arrogant, gossipy, and inexperienced.

Disappointing at all Levels

Business Outlook

Pros

Immediate managers. Some teammates and co-workers.

Cons

Disappointing experience. Managers are generally not good leaders or communicators. Political environment. Introverted, uninspiring founders; invoke fear because not friendly. Product Security and Quality aren't prioritized. White male/macho culture. Jokes in poor taste in public channels and team events. Founders do not set respectful tone by example. Would not refer friends as job candidates. Alcohol-rich environment; drinking to inebriation, hungover employees not unusual. Minority of good leaders rendered invisible by amateurish management culture. Company unlikely to make substantive changes based on feedback.
