Truly a People First Organization

Pros

I have never been at a company that has genuinely cared about it's employees more than DigitalOcean. On a benefit level, they consider all aspects of your life from fitness, commuter, healthcare, and social activities. On a career level, there is a large people team helping everyone build their careers, transition between teams, and provide candid and clear feedback to each other. On a personal level, there is an unlimited PTO plan and a general caring of your comfort and happiness. DigitalOcean has done a great job of sustaining the people-first culture while experiencing hyper growth.

Cons

There are shifts of vision and structural changes more often than I would like but that comes hand in hand with a startup culture.

Thank you for the feedback! We absolutely are working hard to create a People First organization that believes in fully supporting our employees to help them be their best. It is true that in a company thats growing and scaling as rapidly as DO is, there are likely to be some iteration of approach, but we hope we're providing the appropriate transparency and support to help you work through the changes effectively.

Pros

I'm a remote employee, and the culture from the office definitely carries over to the remotes as well. DigitalOcean does a great job of trying to maintain benefit parity between local and remote employees, such as paying for our Internet access instead of a subway pass, sending us snack boxes instead of the in-office kitchen, and so on. Overall everyone I work with is pretty positive about the company and what we're working on, which is hugely refreshing after my last employer.

Cons

Management has been a bit unstable since I was brought on-board, but I think that's mostly a symptom of the company's rapid expansion and trying to find it's feet with a swelling employee count. Even with that though, top brass has done a good job of communicating changes and trying to express their vision to the rest of us.

We care a lot about our remote employees and want them to have the same amazing experience as the folks in our NYC headquarters. Thank you for the positive affirmation that the efforts we are making on their behalf are appreciated!

Too much drama

Pros

The perks are very good, and the pay is good as well. The company is not afraid to pay for the tools you need to get a job done.

Cons

Many (but not all) managers are either too young or just aren't leaders. The founders are very mercurial, and focus on meaningless details often--they are bad with the big picture. The founders are definitely not qualified for a business this large or this technical--they are trying to hold on to the rocketship without getting pushed out the window. The company is fairly slow paced and seems allergic to adding new products and features. They should be more nimble than the big competitors but instead they are slower. Everyone lives in fear that the values and roadmap of the company will change...again (this happens often). The family drama here is real with many of the senior contributors being related and major family squabbles have and continue to hurt the business.

Thanks so much for the candid feedback - developmental suggestions are just as important to us as positive accolades. It is in fact true that our founders are brothers, but we are a deliberately developmental organization; and hopefully even since this review has been posted you've seen materially positive progress in how we operate and work together to drive the business. I think it's pretty clear by now that the leadership team is in this together for the long haul and we are incredibly excited at the positive momentum and trajectory of the business!
