Pros

I was a pretty early employee at DigitalOcean (~25) and worked in the senior management team for over 2 years. I most recently helped with product and people operations. I found working with Ben to be relatively easy - he gave me a lot of room to grow and learn. If you're someone who learns by doing, DigitalOcean is a good place and you'll have a lot of flex to take initiative and run with it. The company generates really great revenue for such a young business and the venture partners are world class.

Cons

I can understand how less experienced folks might get frustrated working at DO as it's generally finding itself all around, however I'm not sure what you'd expect from a massively successful venture backed startup. If you're looking to be with world class mentors, DO is probably not the place for you - you need to excel at learning by yourself and growing yourself. The result of this can manifest as a perceived chaos and instability, in reality it's mostly rapid growth all around.

Pros

• Localized instances of effective personnel, functional teams, and viable products remain. • Existing profitability provides a foundation for sustainable operations. • Prior emphasis on organizational values established a coherent cultural baseline.

Cons

• Ongoing leadership turnover is contributing to a shift in organizational identity. • Current priorities appear to emphasize accelerated growth over long-term sustainability. • Opportunities for deliberate engineering practices and incremental improvement may be underutilized. • Incoming leadership may not fully assess existing teams, technologies, or institutional knowledge, leading to redundant efforts. • Employee capabilities are not consistently evaluated or leveraged, reducing effective role differentiation.

Pros

- Fully remote - Somewhat competitive pay - Relatively good work-life balance if you're not trying to progress in your career.

Cons

- UXR and Product Design have been consistently devalued an divested from in the last 2-3 years. - There seems to be a constant leadership churn, and a lack of understanding or clarity on how non-engineering roles provide value to the organization - Super top-down decision making, but without any effort to provide context or clarity. It's a highest-paid-person in the room kind of culture. And many product decisions seem to be made based on gut feel or board demands.
