Employee lifecycle peaks at the start of their journey through recruitment and onboarding. We bring amazing people in and expect them to jump in and make an impact. After that, leadership expects everything but gives nothing. There is an inherit disconnect from the founders that trickles down. Discord is obvious about its favoritism than I have seen at other tech companies, which causes confusion on strategy as our business attempts to scale.
There has been a lack of investment and interest from leadership to develop our employees. From my experience on the People team, there have been numerous attempts to resolve this issue to no avail. We offer solutions, but the executives are not interested in scalable processes. Time and time again we see exceptions being made for promotion, retention, and departure with little to no context. Employees have caught on unfortunately and are vocally upset, which causes further turmoil having to defend a broken system.
For the past 3 years, our leaders have been more focused on hiring their friends to build coalition and protection at the highest level. This contributes to the issue as they have additional voices to support their decisions. Expect to see more and more restructuring until the founders have control reminiscent of the early days.
