A Truly Great and Unique Place to Work

Pros

Employees are hired based on merit and skill. This has allowed Discord to create a smaller, more collaborative work force where individuals have more autonomy and room for creativity. Additionally, leadership is very open to feedback and is more transparent than many other companies. Leadership at Discord puts effort into listening to the concerns of the workforce in order to make real improvement. The benefits offered to employees are genuinely above and beyond compared to other companies in the industry. In addition to health/denial/vision already offered, Discord recently started offering family planning and transitioning benefits. Discord is very "work hard, play hard" place with an affably confident attitude. It is not a place to clock in/out and coast by. I truly believe in the direction Discord is going both as a product and its internal culture.

Cons

Discord is a young company and with that has made mistakes, but leadership is transparently learning from them. In reality this is both a pro and a con. As an organization Discord is still working on internal career paths for employees that will scale with company growth, however the organization is making good decisions in this regard. Occasionally, leadership will make an attempt at an improvement that does not work. Fortunately in most cases they have been quick to learn, take responsibility and course correct.

People Focused Culture

Pros

Demonstrating empathy and compassion in all interactions is a value at Discord. Business results are important but so are people and that is evident in how decisions are made. One of the key aspects of the culture is to build things that address the unique needs of Discord not simply copying what has worked elsewhere. I truly appreciate that.

Cons

Engineering and Product has more leverage than the rest of the company and drive most of the decisions. Communication and collaboration between functions need improvement but that comes with a growing company. Leadership has started paying more attention to I&D but they need to personally invest time and energy in these conversations for it to resonate more with folks. Currently it seems more bottom up.

Pros

Great culture, incredibly respectful of work/life balance, opportunity to learn, a chance to be part of something that is evolving in very exciting directions. Constantly thinking about how to grow and evolve D&I, how to maintain culture as we have more and more people, and how to accommodate a new push for a remote workforce. The execs are all very approachable and want to maintain that connection.

Cons

Still learning how to support senior level growth and still going through the growing pains of going from small company to big company.
