Pros

Great company to work for, great opportunities for advancement. Excellent benefits. Public has come to know Dollar General as a friendly store, often knowing their customers by name. Creates a sort of a "family" atmosphere. Not something you will find at Wal-Mart or Kmart. I am proud to work for Dollar General, they are a simple company that started off small and are growing by leaps and bounds everyday, while the competitors are going bankrupt Dollar General is growing stronger everyday with new stores opening weekly across the country, creating new jobs for everyday people.

Cons

Lots of hours as a store manager, maybe not a good career choice for someone with a family

Pros

Our store manager is one of the hardest-working people I have ever met, and is the reason that the work environment is positive despite all of the shortcomings of the Corporate Plan for store operations.

Cons

Where to begin...Work hours are regularly cut, leaving too much work for the two people per shift (a manager and cashier), no support system for regular store maintenance (we went three weeks without AC last summer), overworking of managers (60-70 hrs/week), sales/average basket counts hurt employee morale when they write you up for not selling enough product, corporate distrusts employees more than customers (believe high SHRINK due to employees instead of shoplifters), high turnover rate due to much of the above (in three years, I have worked with over 30 people in a store that never employs more than seven people at any given time)...the list goes on and on.

Pros

The only pro I can think of is the communication with people. You learn a lot from your customers and your coworkers.

Cons

Ungrateful upper management, expected to be a "slave", must work overtime with no pay, no help from upper management
