A significant amount of nepotism. Additionally, there is a tendency for senior management to hire younger, female employees, which appears beneficial, especially if they are market-facing, despite the company's emphasis on its DEI policy. I hope I never have to attend a meeting with people who use "super" and "like" multiple times in a single sentence again. EMC Insurance does not practice a merit-based system for promotions and pay raises. There are not many older (50+) men and women in management unless it is the very senior management. The home office marketing staff is almost all female. Not only is nepotism an issue, but there is a real issue with "ageism" at EMC Insurance. The supervisor I reported to was the absolute worst manager I have had in 20+ years. She was condescending, rude, and unprofessional. If your point of view differed from hers, she would berate you and gaslight you. Senior management loves her because she gets numbers that they like. She surrounded herself with little minions that did whatever she wanted and who "bowed to her" whims and directives. The company has made numerous underwriting changes recently, many of which were necessary. However, they did a horrible job messaging the reasons for the changes to their agents and insureds and left it to the market facing staff. When their agents and clients rejected their actions and decided to place their insurance elsewhere, senior management could not understand the retention and new business numbers slipping, and blamed the line underwriters, marketing staff, and first-line managers for not being able to deliver the message appropriately to agents and clients, The thought that EMC is such a great company that agents and insureds should stay with them no matter the premium or restrictions in coverage. The underwriters, loss control, and others that had the tough day to day job were great. AVPs and above are clueless; many of them come from Selective Insurance, which is another problem in itself. The worst two years of my life and career. It's great to leave EMC and move on to bigger and better things. I feel bad for the people staying there.
