Pros

If you are interested in working for NOAA or other science/environmental data research agencies, this is a great place to work and get a feel for whether working at a federal agency is right for you, without actually being a fed. The leadership value technical capabilities and qualifications and hire a diverse set of employees across the organization. High performers are identified and mentored. Technical and management training is a part of the culture of high performance.

Cons

Unless you are at corporate, employment / work for a federal agency is tied to 3-5 year contracts. The government acquisition system usually only cares about one thing: $ not about the contributions of onsite contractors to the mission. So just be eyes-wide-open about the uncertainty.

Pros

At least on the contract I work there is very little knowledge you are expected to have going in. All on the job learning.

Cons

Very little increase in salary over 2 years. I quite literally could not afford to work at ERT in DC/Maryland area without being able to rent from a family member. Average rent in 2023 for a small 1 bedroom is $2100/month, and my take home pay is $3000/month.
