Pros

Some projects are cool Overtime bonus is nice Casual atmosphere Great if you like design Access to a lot of good engineering resources

Cons

Hellish hours on certain projects Starting pay for new engineers is a joke New engineers are over worked and often treated like technicians or interns You may not get the help you need if you ask for it

Pros

Work is generally interesting and self directed. Problems encountered are challenging and require a wide range of engineering, practical, and personal skills. The pay and benefits are generous after a few years thanks to profit sharing. Lots of hands on experience, control of your design for the entire product cycle. No levels of management to deal with, just project managers and executives.

Cons

Below-market pay for the first 2-3 years before raises and profit share bring you to median and then beyond. High levels of personal responsibility can often lead to long work hours. Workplace training philosophy is sink or swim. Workplace politics and gossip seem excessive at this company, though I have not worked long term at another engineering firm for comparison. Personal views of the owner/president pervade company policy and culture, so you have to put up with it or leave if they don't match your own views.

Pros

I was able to pick up some very rewarding and challenging work. You are very much trusted to get on with your work and apply yourself. Engineers are usually very keen to share their knowledge with you, I have learned a great deal from my colleagues. There are good opportunities for travel. Design engineers are expected to take responsibility for their work all the way onto site. There's no set pathway for new hires. Some will see this as a con, but I really benefited from it. I was able to choose what path I wanted to take (within the confines of what was available to me obviously).

Cons

Some people find the lack of organised training difficult (i don't include myself in this). Engineers from the UK will not be working on design of robotics, just tooling. It's possible that some design work for robotics will be coming to the UK in the not too distant future. Also there's plenty of work on the robots in support and installation roles.
