Pros

Benefits and lots of PTO if you ever get to use them.

Cons

The higher management in APU does not look for improvement or how to retain their people. There is a lot of judgement and gossip around every department that is a constant tension. People will constantly complain about everything and anything if it is not the same as it has been for 20 years. The pay is so low and most upper level salary positions require 60+ hr workweeks to function. There is a large judgement if you try to retain a healthy work life balance. It is horrible to try to take PTO because there is barely enough people in each department and very rarely cross trained so you come back with more work and stress than before. Most things do not have an actual system of tracking and measuring or a previous backlog so you have to guess in what to do in most job duties. People will not come to you with problems and will immediately rise it to higher level management or take it onto a petty route. It was the most horrible job of my life. I was constantly stressed and barely could sleep as I was expected to be able to answer emails and my phone 24/7. You will be judged and complained about unless you are lucky enough to be a part of the few departments that can get away with murder because they have favoritism from higher ups. Most employees I talked to in my time were completely stressed and wanted to quit. Most didn’t just due to the health insurance which is good, but they were barely making enough for how much stress and work it took and they were consistently looking for new jobs. Impressions are huge here and if someone does not like you from the start or they hear bad gossip about you, you will not escape it and be taken seriously. I’m surprised there haven’t been multiple lawsuits for some of the shady business practices I have seen. Higher ups are blind to a lot of practices that go on here.

Pros

Some of the people there are nice, and I still talk to to this day. Benefits such as health, dental, visions were good as well as tuition for employees being covered in full and a huge benefit.

Cons

This position specifically has a lot of moving parts, I haven't seen many universities where students accounts is maintained by one person making between $24-29 an hour and your responsible for weekly student refunds, monthly student billings, monthly collections, daily student postings to the SIS system and then having to turn around and post to a separate accounting system because the two don't integrate with each other. Daily phone calls/emails from the student body. Not to mention you are also responsible for year end 1098t review, distribution, and IRS upload. Honestly this is just touching the surface of your responsibilities.
