Pros

They work on important issues. The place is staffed with high caliber people. The work can be very rewarding. I made a lot of good friends there and was proud of my work. Generous vacation time. Good health benefits.

Cons

It operates on a star system and rewards self promoters. There are a lot of big egos. Those who do good work quietly tend to be overshadowed by strivers. This created tension and frustration. Also, civil rights advocates don't always make for attentive and careful managers. Most had never received any management training and it often showed. They ask a lot of the staff and seem to believe that the privilege of working on civil rights/liberties issues compensated for low pay and long hours.

Pros

Great environment to work. Everyone is invested in your growth and success. Meaningful work from day 1.

Cons

No true cons, sometimes work can be slow, but that's expected as an intern.

Pros

Very interesting work, prestige, nice working hours generally

Cons

My boss’s boss, who I worked with a lot, was extremely critical. I was warned about her before I joined and my co-intern and I bonded about the fact that we both cried after receiving feedback from her for the first time. She was rude, called us names, and made me question if I was fit for the legal profession. I lightly brought this up to my attorney mentor who told me that everyone is just used to it and that is just how it is. I did not feel comfortable writing this in my review because she was the one who read it. I interned many years ago so this may be different now, but it’s something I still think about.
