Pros
The mission of ACLU is great. Many of the staff are really nice. Benefits are good but can be hard to take advantage of.
Cons
The big problem with working at this particular branch of the ACLU in MA is that so many (not all) managers including the ED are frequently unprofessional, like yelling at people level of treatment. A lot of decisions are arbitrary and based on favoritirsm. There is a lot of racism and retaliation, too. Some really good employees have left or been forced out.The staff has now stepped up to form a union (which management opposes, even though the ACLU is supposed to be in favor of unions), so we'll see if that can make things better. Hours are killer for most staff. We are just told how lucky we are to be there. It feels ironic that staff get so squashed working for an org that is supposed to be so wonderful. The degree to which the values of the organization do not align with reality for employees is very frustrating. Also there is rarely room for any promotion since many jobs are not posted. Consider it a steppingstone job, I guess.
