Meaningful work, with caveats - Communications Strategist American Civil Liberties Union Employee Review

Pros

Really interesting, high-impact work. In a time of a lot of national uncertainty and toxicity, it felt like we were meaningfully fighting back. I do believe the organization tries to consistently do better, and it's a space that encourages discourse and dissent (which can be exhausting, but is better than the alternative).

Cons

This can be such a weird place to work. There are so many traps to fall into in terms of dynamics with affiliates, relationships with colleagues, etc. Training is limited, so you often don't the rules and norms until you've broken them (and made someone quite angry at you). There's a lot of ego. It's a 100-year-old legal organization at its core, and there's a lot of elitism and toxicity, particularly directed at people who aren't white men who went to Harvard. There's not a lot of accountability for some people (almost exclusively white men) who seem to fail upward.

Pros

Great environment to work. Everyone is invested in your growth and success. Meaningful work from day 1.

Cons

No true cons, sometimes work can be slow, but that's expected as an intern.

Pros

Very interesting work, prestige, nice working hours generally

Cons

My boss’s boss, who I worked with a lot, was extremely critical. I was warned about her before I joined and my co-intern and I bonded about the fact that we both cried after receiving feedback from her for the first time. She was rude, called us names, and made me question if I was fit for the legal profession. I lightly brought this up to my attorney mentor who told me that everyone is just used to it and that is just how it is. I did not feel comfortable writing this in my review because she was the one who read it. I interned many years ago so this may be different now, but it’s something I still think about.
