Pros

good place to build a diverse skill set before you go to a real business. I keep hearing that the building itself is something that I should be giving gratitude to my selected deity on a nightly basis but like most things Overstock, they are basing the strength of amenities on two year old data and the silicon slopes have lapped us. Well, I'm comparing Overstock to real tech companies which isn't fair.

Cons

1. They don't write history books about second-rate internet retailers. What does that have to do with the price of tea in China you ask? Our humble servant realized that he was loosing the war to Amazon and needed to pivot...so enter the lawsuit. 10 years of mob bosses and Sith Lords and execs wearing wires yada yada yada. The company only existed as a vehicle for the lawsuit. So what now that the lawsuit ends and he still isn't the subject of a biography? Bitcoin! Block chain! Look here! I have a legacy beyond an outlet mall on the internet! So now Overstock only exists to further fund the vain glory of the CEO. It's tough to build long-term visions and strategies as Overstock will always be his redhead stepchild while he desperately tries to distance himself from the most accurate description of him; that of the bottom-feeder getting fat on the remains of expiring e-tailers. Dude, just publish your autobiography on Amazon like every other independent hack writer does nowadays. 2. The "do as I say not as I do" mentally among much of Sr management. This is again driven from the CEO who laments the fact that his offices are empty at 6 or 7 at night as he sends the entire staff videos of his ski vacations taken during customer care's PTO blackout period. What was that line about sitting in the cart again? Or was it save paper clips or cutting the end of the ham? So many self-serving played out mantras so little time.

Pros

Fast paced environment with LOTS of hands-on experience with many different tools. The people are the reason to stay, lots of smart and caring people, managers, and leaders towards the bottom of the food chain.

Cons

Upper Management has completely destroyed this company and gutted it. In my several years at the company, communication is as poor as it could be. Bonuses are promised and then not followed up on. RIFs happen far too frequently. It is abundantly clear that this company does NOT care about it's employees, and at the moment is almost seems like they are trying as hard as they can to get people to quit so they don't have to pay severances before acquiring more companies and moving headquarters to Texas. The culture in the days of Overstock was incredible, it made people excited about being able to work there. Now people are hanging on by threads, large teams are now carried on the backs of just 1-2 people without additional pay as we see co-workers get laid off left and right. It is not sustainable. Important things are being missed because there are not enough people to do the work, which will end up biting the company in the butt for compliance and finance reasons.
