Pros

Overstock.com is a great place to learn about the complexities of an online retail business. The company attracts some extremely talented and passionate employees. The business model that the original leaders put in place is innovative and has the potential to be very profitable. I am grateful to Patrick for bringing so many jobs to Utah.

Cons

The senior team, vp's and above, are absolutely the worst group of "leaders" that I have ever encountered. They spend way too much time trying to be liked by the president, afraid that they will fall out of her grace from day to day, they consistently belittle each other and not one member of the remaining team has enough backbone to truly speak their mind. The president is an extremely emotionally immature leader that throws temper tantrums and lashes out when she things don't go her way. The "leaders" ignore the Silent Whistles that speak ill of the president and they are much too worried about their own salaries and stock benefits than the true health of the company. I am amazed that the chairman of the board and the board members tolerate such poor leadership, and make no mistake, they are painfully aware of the issues. Nepotism and cronyism are rampant and act as a plague to the morale of the employees. The leaders say all of the right things but lip service is the result. They have come to despise the excellent leadership qualities that Mr.Tryon worked hard to put in place and from all appearances, they have come to despise the culture etc. of the state of Utah.

Pros

Fast paced environment with LOTS of hands-on experience with many different tools. The people are the reason to stay, lots of smart and caring people, managers, and leaders towards the bottom of the food chain.

Cons

Upper Management has completely destroyed this company and gutted it. In my several years at the company, communication is as poor as it could be. Bonuses are promised and then not followed up on. RIFs happen far too frequently. It is abundantly clear that this company does NOT care about it's employees, and at the moment is almost seems like they are trying as hard as they can to get people to quit so they don't have to pay severances before acquiring more companies and moving headquarters to Texas. The culture in the days of Overstock was incredible, it made people excited about being able to work there. Now people are hanging on by threads, large teams are now carried on the backs of just 1-2 people without additional pay as we see co-workers get laid off left and right. It is not sustainable. Important things are being missed because there are not enough people to do the work, which will end up biting the company in the butt for compliance and finance reasons.
