Pros
Very big organization so they can afford new technology. New buildings almost yearly it seems. Largest employer in the region so good opportunity for new grads to build CV. Opportunities to teach or participate in research. Very busy campus.
Cons
Many of the staff are clock watchers so not motivated to get the job done quickly, just by 5. Management appears to be largely promotion by attrition, or on a buddy system. Very physician focused so PA's are not respected or included in decision processes. As a PA, you are reminded daily that you are a third class citizen in the Carilion business model. -Sat Clinic: do your own rooming/vitals/orders/everything. You don't get a nurse. MD does -Clinic: change work location constantly to accommodate MD that is in the office today. -Pay: No production bonus, but we are going to require you to work more hours/clinic/Pt's MD will see 30 pt's in a clinic, PA will see 27. MD makes 1.3 million with production bonus, PA will get 6k end of year bonus after taxes. Maybe. Carilion tax filings are available online so you can see for yourself what they pay themselves. As the PA, you cover whatever the MD's decide is a "PA task." Carilion has a reputation of hiring new grads from their own school (Jefferson College) at depressed Salaries (...you don't have experience) and running them into the ground. Once they are burned out, show them the door and hire another new grad. No tangible retention policy.
