Pros

Provide excellent care to the community. Seasoned and successful tech staff.

Cons

You will be expected to put in a full day of work. You will then need to work your second shift and your third shift to do your job. You will still need show up for work and be flawless. Senior Management in the tech department has shared that there is no place for staff to go given the size of Roanoke and the lack of tech jobs. Tech workers are equated to doctors and nurses who are there 24x7 with one difference there are different people for the three shifts. In technology group, you are it. There are so few actual workers that you have to work at night and during the day to do your job. Most people you see in the department are burnt out. If anything you do, no matter how carefully you plan it, communicate it, and execute it, there is threat of corrective action if even one person grumbles in the wrong ear. Staff is afraid to to do their job because of the threat of being demeaned and being subject to punitive action. There is show and communications for non-punitive discussions. This is not the truth. Seasoned managers and directors have been demeaned to the point of ineffectiveness. They do not know the expectations of the new senior IT leadership as it is changed at senior management whim and used used against them under the guise of not being with the program. Senior management in the tech department cannot be trusted to keep their word. What is said in public is opposite of what is said behind closed doors. IT reports up to the EVP over HR so there will be no hope of help there. Everyone is afraid to go to HR for help as they will be subject to having a finger wagged in their faces. HR will just send identified information back to those in charge at IT and then get disconnected. There are ample funds available and spent to redecorate the building and tens of thousands spent on Senior Leadership office decor, but there is no funding available to keep up your skills or to attend conferences. There are ample funds for hiring high-dollar consultants but no attempt to spend it on staff. New positions can be created for Directors and Managers but not for those that need to execute the directives of the organization or department. There are more work gatherers than there are work doers. Seasoned and even new staff is exiting. Everyone is sprucing up their resumes. This is a ship that in starting to run aground and no one from executive levels of the organization is paying attention. There are some executives outside of the IT department who know and feel the ship is sinking, but are doing nothing about it.

Cons

Are you searching for a job that truly redefines your expectations — in all the worst ways? Step right up. Do you enjoy being encouraged into prayer at gatherings? Craving a workplace that preaches caring about employees while doing the exact opposite? You’re in luck. Looking for a company that refuses to hire enough staff, then wonders why everything is falling apart? Perfect match. Love the idea of all your holidays, sick days, and PTO being mashed into one tiny 7‑hour‑every‑two‑weeks accrual? A true masterpiece of “efficiency.” Want to meet every requirement management throws at you… only to receive no raise whatsoever? Inspirational. Dream of dedicating five years of your life just to earn a microscopic pension? A real fairy tale. Training? Don’t be silly. Inclusion for LGBTQ+ employees? Only if “inclusion” means pretending the topic doesn’t exist. Improvement? Why improve when ignoring problems is free — and money is more important anyway. Enjoy paying more and more every year for health insurance that somehow keeps getting worse? A rare skill, really. And don’t forget the cherry on top: internal company “reviews” that claim to be anonymous… but absolutely are not. Nothing says “we value feedback” like making sure no one feels safe giving any. If you love hearing that multiple employees are unhappy, seeing bad reviews pile up, and being underpaid for the mountain of nonsense you deal with daily, congratulations! You’ve found your forever home.
