Small company with less than 20 employees
People get promoted to manager because they got there first not necessarily because they are good at their jobs.
The product feels like it was slapped together with $2 and a paper clip at times and no one but the engineers in Belarus understand fully how it works, and sometimes even they don't know.
The CEO is pretty clumsy with HR matters. He is the HR dept and he's not skilled in this area so if you have an HR issue come up you're on your own. He publicly teases people (thinking he is funny but no one laughs) at company meetings and made me very uncomfortable at times. I don't think he realizes he has this affect on people and he seems like a good guy, albeit one with a fragile ego. He's also not accountable to anyone but himself for his behavior which is sometimes harsh.
More than a year into working at the company he told me he was disappointed with hiring me but when I pressed him for details on what could be done to improve or what I had done wrong he wouldn't give specifics. He did say he didn't like that I took a medical leave without concern for the affect on the team. It was a leave ordered by my physician in writing not something I planned on taking and at the time he expressed support. I obviously didn't plan on being sick. (Days before he said this to me my direct supervisor had complimented me on my productivity and positive contribution to the team.)
He also wanted me to take over all of the training and support documentation for the whole company without a requisite salary increase. He said his wouldn't be a promotion but something I would do "to help the company out." I believe I offended him by trying to negotiate a fair salary and he fired me a few days later out of the blue with no clear explanation. To be fair he did provide two weeks severance.
