Pros
Starting pay is well above state and national average. The company is centered around the Thames River, with the shipyard and Groton offices on one side and the New London Engineering office on the other side. Working in New London, you have river views and can walk outside during the summertime and fall, which is beautiful. Work can be very interesting and engaging, and there are a lot of opportunities to learn new skills, from training to company procedures to ASME specifications. Lots of opportunities to move to other disciplines as well.
Cons
Workplace culture can be quite toxic, depending on discipline and department. There are a lot of seasoned professionals who generally don’t like dealing with new engineers for their lack of experience and knowledge of submarines, though there are many that are the opposite. It seems that managers don’t care how well you do your job, just that you’re a cog in a machine that keeps turning. There are too many new employees and it is hard for department supervisors and managers to keep track, especially with the experience gap. Also... parking. I wasn’t expecting it to be a problem, but it is nearly dealbreaking.
