Pros
If you’re looking for a job where essentially can do nothing while watching others do the work this place is for you. I’d you want a place where you bring your concerns to management and they tell you it’s just the way it is, this place is for you. If you want a place that pushes back on change and improvements, welcome aboard.
Cons
Electric Boat is like a slow moving landslide and is full of many absolutely useless employees. There is very little incentive to make change and improve things and proposed ideas are resisted. New software intended to improve things is not properly vetted and is cumbersome, frustrating, and poorly managed. In lieu of fixing these issues work arounds are put in place. Employee moral is at an all time low and we are all told that we should have a passion for shipbuilding and the mission of protecting the country and that you shouldn’t ask for better. The company is too heavy with management who are padding their retirement in their last few years and don’t care about making things better. Many people are actively looking for other jobs as they are disappointed in management, disappointed in raises, and lac of improvement in benefits. Company has no interest in retaining people for positions which take years to be knowledgeable. There are departments full of absolutely useless people but people are not fired unless you basically violate a law (sexual harassment, mischarging). Majority of your day is involved with making sure other people do their job and often times that involves so much frustration you wonder how we ever build a sub and how they don’t have a major catastrophe which is concerning. Critiques are often performed but focus always seems to focus on getting off a list versus fixing the root cause. Majority of new employees use this job as a stepping stone and have no intention of staying more than 2 years.
