GD is a large stable organization with a healthy growth strategy. It is involved in literally every technical area of current relevance in the aerospace/defense industry. It is composed of legacy elements, such as Electric Boat, that lead the world in product development and execution. Lateral transfers among sectors can be done to suit the individuals interests. It is also compose of the most forward looking sectors as exemplified by its space and communications.software activities.
Cons
The company is not an integrated whole. It often has several business sectors competing for the same projects. This confuses customers and does not lead to an optimal corporate or customer approach. There is little or no cooperation between sectors take on multi-discipline projects. The sum of the parts is not greater than the whole. The company behaves as a set of almost autonomous units. There is strength in this approach from a diversified point of view, but it does not lend itself to combined corporate strength in pursuit of business.
