Unclear product strategy, too focused on short-term projects - Data Scientist Groupon Employee Review

Pros

You'll learn a lot of full-stack data engineering skills, if that's what you're looking for.

Cons

The job isn't really "data science" according to the definition commonly accepted in the industry. The team doesn't do much modeling or machine learning. Rather, most of the day-to-day work concerns pipeline maintenance and data engineering. Also, the product owner doesn't always have a clear vision on strategic priorities or what the team should do next. Work is often handed to us in a piecemeal way, which leads to short-term focus and instability. Career growth is limited because the job isn't really differentiated between junior vs senior-level Data Scientists. So, even if you're promoted, you won't necessarily get increasing responsibility.

Thanks for taking the time to leave this thoughtful review about your time at Groupon. One of our values is "Ownership and Performance," which we think complements your experience. We want Grouponers to have the ability to take chances and learn by having a breadth of opportunities that may not be available somewhere else. That said, it's a delicate balance to strike between "autonomy" and "ambiguity," and we recognize there's always room for refinement there. This feedback is just as important to us internally, so we hope you had the chance to share these observations with your manager, leadership team, or in our anonymous pulse surveys. Thank you for the dedicated years you spent with Groupon, and we wish you the best of luck in your next adventure.

Pros

Learned a great deal here. My first big guy job and the responsibilities kept me focused and motivated. I grew a lot as a person at Groupon as well

Cons

Not many cons. People are really cool.

Pros

Casual dress code. Beautiful office views. Easily the only enjoyable and stable things about the company. Oh and the trauma bonds (shoutout to the wonderful people I closely worked with)!

Cons

Literally everything else. When I was laid off, a huge weight lifted off my shoulders and my anxiety faded. That alone says EVERYTHING. In my experience as a recruiter, extending an offer should’ve felt exciting. Here, it almost always felt like I needed to apologize in advance. European leadership decisions were flat out disconnected from the realities of a U.S.-based workforce. Communication was often abrupt and rude (or non-existent), priorities shifted quickly, and stability was nowhere to be found. Also, if you’re not a master of AI, don’t even bother applying because it’s not encouraged, it’s enforced. It’s obvious the CEO wants the company to be as robotic as he is. Additional layoffs are also guaranteed (you can look this up). If you’re desperate for a paycheck or need a short-term resume filler, this could work. But only if you don’t value transparency, respect, or your sanity. You’ll likely find yourself counting down the days because you’ll be set up to fail from the start. So to sum up: if I had a dollar for every time I used to think to myself “I hate it here”, I wouldn’t have to work again.
