Pros

Free lunch but you have to serve yourself out of the bins they set out for students

Cons

Be prepared for the bait and switch at the interview. I was hired at Long Beach then told I was to work in Wilmington (most polluted city in the continental US, high asthma rate, children dying of cancer [see NY Times]). I grew to love Wilmington and the locals, but it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. There's no contract, but she won't fire you. Famous last words. (I was fired two months before I was to receive my Loan Forgiveness that I worked 4 years and 10 months towards.) I felt like I was treated like a guinea pig, a scapegoat and a dog. You deserve to be treated with the respect and dignity of a highly-qualified teacher. The money and promises are not what they appear to be. The generic pros mentioned above are quite obviously written by management. Every perk promised was a lie in some way. They did not pay for my tuition. The matched 403b LOST money while I was there (I think their broker is a thief.) The six hours was more like 10-12. The inexperienced management is straight sadistic and a fear-based, consequence-driven model is favored over authentic leadership (save one exception who does genuinely care about the welfare of students and staff.) I am suing them. If you’ve been treated like I have been, please join in doing the same - it’s the only way they listen. I pray for their demise. Go union. I should never have left my public. The opening of new charters was voted down 6 to 1 at that LA school board meeting for a reason.

Pros

-6 hours (despite you getting the job and then they try to tell you that you have to work 8 but won’t legally write that down since it’s not legal) -can make a difference for some students

Cons

-admin hires their family and those people do nothing -admin team out for not doing their job but can’t take criticism, blames it on all of the teachers and team while they do nothing all day and gossip -large amounts of favoritism and nepotism at the Chula Vista site -students don’t graduate -10% grad rate and can confirm. They use kids as numbers to blame teachers, but the kid will never graduate -have recently been bribing students with credits to speak about the school favorably when the news comes around -a lot of teachers let students cheat and admin supports it -an extremely hostile work environment where admin allows teachers to scream at one another, no intervention, and threaten staff -crazy work, deadlines, and lack of accountability as to where teacher funding goes
