Pros
Students are committed and hardworking. Colleagues are professional, easy to get along with, and are supportive of each other. The cost of living in the area is very reasonable, and there are just enough things to do on campus and in town to keep interested and busy.
Cons
The pay has completely stagnated -- and it wasn't good before it stagnated. On average, faculty at Marshall make 70% of the national average salaries for positions in the same area. I took at huge pay cut to come to Marshall. Compounding the difficult financial situation is the fact that the Huntington City Council recently passed at 1% income tax. Between inflation, new taxes, and constant salaries (not even cost of living adjustments), it gets harder and harder to stay here each year.
